Teeth whitening, with your whole smile in mind

Teeth whitening begins with finding out whether it is suitable for you. D4 considers the cause of tooth discoloration, gum condition, and existing restorations, then discusses whitening options and how they may fit your overall smile.

Is teeth whitening right for me?

Whether whitening is suitable starts with understanding the cause of the color change, your oral condition, and any existing restorations. After an examination, we can discuss suitable options and what change may reasonably be expected.

Overall yellowing

Distinguish surface staining from the natural underlying tooth color before discussing whether whitening is suitable and what change may be expected.

One tooth has become darker

First investigate why the tooth has changed color; a whole-mouth whitening plan should not be applied automatically.

Existing fillings, crowns, or veneers

Whitening mainly changes natural tooth color. Existing restorations do not whiten at the same time, so color difference and overall coordination need to be assessed.

Sensitivity or gum discomfort

First examine and address problems that need treatment, then decide how whitening should be arranged.

How is whitening arranged at D4?

  1. 01

    Oral examination and shade record

Understand the cause of discoloration, previous treatment, and sensitivity history, then record the current tooth shade.

  2. 02

    Discuss goals and treatment options

Consider tooth shade, restorations, and your schedule when discussing a suitable approach, expected change, and points to note.

  3. 03

    Whitening according to the plan

Arrange treatment according to the selected approach, monitor tooth and gum responses, and report any discomfort promptly.

  4. 04

Review tooth shade and everyday care

Review color change and sensitivity, then discuss daily care and any later restorative planning.

Whitening can also be the first step in aesthetic restoration

For teeth with a deeper underlying shade that are suitable for whitening and have room to improve, D4 may recommend improving the natural tooth shade before planning veneers. Improving the underlying shade can reduce the need for masking and create room for a thinner, more translucent veneer design.

Veneer thickness and tooth preparation still depend on the remaining tooth shade, tooth shape, material, and bite; whitening does not mean that ultra-thin veneers or no-preparation veneers will necessarily be possible. After whitening, time must be allowed for the shade to stabilize and before bonding conditions are suitable; the dentist will determine shade matching and restoration timing.

Questions you may still have about teeth whitening

What is the difference between cleaning and whitening?
Cleaning mainly removes calculus and surface staining; whitening is used to adjust natural tooth color. They have different purposes, so the cause of the color change should be considered first.
How white can teeth become?
The change depends on the starting tooth shade, the cause of discoloration, and the treatment response. After checking and recording the shade, we can discuss a goal and expectation. The same degree of whitening cannot be promised for everyone.
Can whitening cause sensitivity?
Tooth sensitivity or gum irritation may occur during or after whitening. Tell the dentist about previous sensitivity before treatment; report discomfort promptly during treatment so the dentist can assess whether the plan needs adjustment.
How long does whitening last?
Whitening is not permanent. Maintenance is affected by diet, smoking, and oral-care habits. Follow advised daily care and reviews, and do not repeat whitening frequently on your own.
How many appointments are needed, and how much time should I allow?
The number of treatments and overall time depend on tooth shade, the chosen approach, and the treatment response. If you have a wedding, photo shoot, or later restoration planned, tell the dentist in advance so time can be allowed for examination, treatment, and shade observation.

You can start by telling D4 which shade you would like to improve, about any previous whitening or restorative treatment, and whether you have experienced sensitivity. A specific whitening approach can only be determined after an oral examination.
